Discount AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener

One of my best friends owns a restaurant, which gets very busy on the weekends and he serves vegetables from a can. This means that he needs to find a quick way to open the cans and the best way to do this is an electric can opener because it does all of the work for you. The manual version takes a lot longer because it disconnects at many points if you are not applying enough pressure and many of the weaker employees could not use them because they did not have the wrist strength to actually open the can within a few minutes. I have found that there are some great electronic can openers and here are the ones, which I like:

1) Black & Decker KEC600

This is probably the best opener that I have used because it requires just two hours of charge and then it can be unplugged and notched onto the can. It opens cans with the push of a button and goes into the dishwasher which is hard to find at just $20 about 1 ½ pounds.

2) Hamilton Beach 76606

This opener is 3 pounds and sells for $29 dollars but I liked it because of the fact that it has the ability to open any size cans, which includes tops that include a ring for opening. It also leaves a smooth cut which keeps you safe and it works very quickly.

3) Hamilton Beach 76500

This item costs $25 and is also cordless and uses a wall charger, it weights about 1 pound and only requires you latch it onto the can and turn it on. It turns itself off to save power, which is nice, and it keeps you safe.

4) West Bend 77201

This is $25 and comes in blue, black, and red it weighs about 5 pounds because it is corded but it includes features like a knife sharpener and bottle opener along with automatic shut off which is nice.

5) Oster Can Opener

If you are looking for something for $15 this is it because it works well, you just attach and turn on and it works quickly. However, it is corded and you need to wash it by hand.

6) Protector SIlex Power Opener

This unit has a chord and costs $20 but it is great for taller cans up to 7 inches and includes the ability to sharper your knives and scissors at just 3 pounds.

7) Black & Decker BLDEC475

This is an opener that is about two ponds, it has a wrap around hanger so you can wrap the cord around the back and the machine opens very tall cans. There was no tall can that we could not open with this machine.

8) Hamilton Beach 76383

I liked this one because it is red and matches with the theme of his restaurant, it is just $17 it is just 2 pounds and can be put directly into the dishwasher, which he liked.

9) Black & Decker Lids-Off Center

This is a heavy opener which stays on the counter, it is adjustable to any can size and requires just the push of one button. It also opens bottles but it costs $45 so this is a high-end item for restaurants.

10) Toastmaster 2249

I liked this item because I got it at target for $9 it is 3 pounds but very small in size so it did not get in the way. It requires that you dent the can but it also includes a knife sharpener, which I liked.

More and more cans are coming from the manufacturer with manually pull-off ring-tab tops. I have noticed this shift beginning with soups and expect that we will see a time when the can opener, in either it's electric of manual incarnations, will become obsolete. That transition is apt to take quite a few years, so I am not throwing away all of mine yet. A can opener is a basic household appliance that can be either simple or complex, manual or electric, highly effective or a wast of money and source for continuing frustration. This Proctor – Silex is in the latter category. Sold as a 'combination' electric can opener and manual knife sharpener, it is designed in such a way as to render it appropriate feed for the rummage pile – perhaps someone who has never had anything that worked better would like to have it. More likely, I think the experience of using this machine would drive most users back to the simply, manual, squeeze-to-close and bite-through-the-edge and turn-the-rotating-handle-manually devices of our mothers' kitchens. It isn't that there are not good, efficient and effective electric can openers – my current favorite is one of those “AS Seen ON TV” One-Touch battery powered openers that you just p[lace down on top of the can and push the button. The opener does all the rest itself, and it works. But, back to this Proctor – Silex.

The most annoying feature is the unnecessary and problematic separating of the cutting assembly – the part of the unit that contains the handle you press down on to engage the cutting blade, the cutting blade itself and the magnet intended to keep hold of the can's top as it is opened and afterwards. I think their intentions were good. According to the manual, this removeable piece allows for easier cleaning and maintenance. Maybe so. Bu what the manual doe not say is that this handle, blade and magnet section easily and regularly slides out of its correct positioning, causing the opener to not work. Before each and every use, it has to be removed and correctly reinserted. Not exactly a convenience. It is as though the design was never actually tried by human in real kitchens with real cans before the product was released to market.

It is not unattractive. Mine is/was black to match other kitchen appliances and it has the appearance of being solidly built. You would never know to look at it that after each and every use, that handle assembly needs to be manually removed and reinserted into the correct position for the next can. The Knife Sharpening feature is equally unimpressive in that it is a simple, non-powered slot on the back of the unit that you can slide a knife through once or twice to sharpen it up a bit. A simple sharpening iron does a far better job, as would just about any power sharpening device.

I tend to shop carefully and, consequently I like most of the products I buy. This one was an 'impulse' buy that I regret and anoint with a big thumbs down.
